Default Credit scores and predicting risk

My credit tanked several years ago when an extended illness and hospitalization took my income from $6/hr to zero. and left me unable to work for a year. All my open accounts were closed and charged off. My old debt gets sold and re-aged, keeping my credit in the tank.

Unable to continue paying rent without an income, when I got out of the hospital I moved elsewhere to stay with family until I could return to work.

Living in a new area, I did not return to my old job, and got a cashier job in a convenience store earning minimum wage. I worked there for several years handling cash without any problem.

I have not used any credit in the past eight years. I am living on a poverty level income and pay my rent on time but do not have any extra money to resolve old debt.

What exactly does my poor credit score have to do with (predicting) my ability to pay rent on time or to handle cash on the job?

I think some landlords/employers look at it as a "potential" red flag... like bad scores would be a higher temptation for embezzlement perhaps?

Predicting ability to pay any bill on time is the purpose of credit scoring, so it seems reasonable that a landlord would want to know scores if they don't know you or have a history with you.

Have you looked into any credit repair options out there? You might be able to help yourself out with some of the great info on this site.
