Social Security Screwed Me!
To make a long story.. and i do mean LONG story short..
July 2008: filed for disability. Unable to work due to MS
August 2008: Started new drug which took away all my symptoms. Stopped filling out SSA forms and returned to work
March 2009: Received approval of disability. Notified them immediately that i was working. Was told i'd be entered into a work trial and to keep collecting
October 2009: Trial over, was still able to work so money stopped
December 2009: Receive letter from SSA stating they made a mistake in granting me disability and i owe over $14,000 when i was only paid $6,000
December 2009-September 2010: Appeal, appeal, appeal. (stop actions (ie: don't report to credit bureaus or collect from employer due to investigation) put on my file several times by SSA local office workers)
October 2010: Amount finally corrected after much dispute. Signed agreement to pay back.
Monday November 15th, 2010: check my credit score for the first time in a couple months only to find that back in July of this year SSA had put me to collection. And keeps reporting it every month.
I already have letters written up to send to the three credit bureaus as well as a letter to SSA...
MY QUESTION IS!
Am i wrong to believe that it is unlawful for someone to put you on collection while you are disputing the debt amount. AND is it unlawful to put someone to collection when an agreement to pay has been signed.
.. Oh, and should i include in the letters to the bureaus that the amount was incorrect, was resolved, and i am now paying back or should i just keep it vague like : "This money was never paid to me" It does state on the credit reports that the amount was changed some time in September but they're still showing i'm on collection for $6,000. Also, i was never informed by ANYONE that i was going to collection.. could this be something i could use to support myself?
They have destroyed my credit. What should i do?
I'm sorry that i didn't keep it so short.

I'd personally hit it from both sides... 1) dispute letters to credit bureaus like you are doing. Dispute anything that is inaccurate. 2) Work with SSA to remove the collection. With all your supporting evidence, it would only be reasonable for them to remove the collection. I mean it was their fault in the first place as they admitted the screw up! And they told you to continue collecting so I'm not even sure how they can come back and put a collection on your account because they screwed up, gave you money, and told you to continue collecting money even after you took the initiative to tell them you were back at work and didn't need it.
That is seriously messed up. Good luck - I'd be real interested to hear what ends up happening with all this.
