520 is very bad, the scores range from 350-850 and your considered bad credit and financing is extreamly limited for anyone under a 640. Having a 520 means you probably have no open active accounts and various collections. We are only rated on what is open and what we are currently paying on. You recieve no points on accounts you've paid in the past. Also yo have to think of credit in terms of neggative and possitive points. If you have no open credit and you were to remove all your bad credit your scores would dissapere, not go up. THese days, even Qalifying for a home loan FHA requires a 640 almost everywhere.

Three major credit-reporting agencies are Equifax, TransUnion and Experian.
With the help of AnnualCreditReport dot com you can access your annual credit report online for free.

I heard if you keep on checking your credit report score, it will eventually lower you score...Does anybody else know this?.....

Yes that is true - each time a creditor pulls your credit (makes an inquiry), it dings your score a few points.

No, that's NOT true. You can check your OWN credit report as often as you like. It only takes a hit when a CREDITOR checks it.

Mossi is correct in that you can pull your score as much as you want yourself online and it does NOT affect your score OR hit you with a hard inquiry. HOWEVER if you read the fine print on ALL online credit report sites you will find that they ALL use their own scoring model and the scores are not the same as what a lender or financial institution will pull. You as the consumer do not have access to your TRUE FICO scores. The information within your report is correct as your credit information is public information but your scores will rarely be accurate.
Recently for example, Truecredit.com (which is by Trans Union) was forced to change their entire scoring model because it was too similar to FICO's scoring model. A lawsuit was files against them and where their scores used to be one of the closest to your real FICO scores, they are now nearly 100 points off. Remember, this is a site BY TRANS UNION. Your online credit scores are meaningless as they are not based on FICO's scoring model.
